Position: Right Back
Age: 22
Nationality: Spanish
Current Team: Olympique de Marseille
Appearances: 170 (2)
Estimated Price: 7 - 10 million pounds
Other Interested Teams: None
Continuing with assessing potential right back solutions, comes César Azpilicueta. A Spain U23 international, he is primarily a rigt back who can be occasionally played on the left.
Marseille finished in 10th place this year which means they'll be playing no European football next year. So players like Azpilicueta should be open to a move overseas and the club would definitely have no choice but to let them leave.
He can best be described as a combative full back who is aggressive in his challenges. While he doesn't score too many goals ( this also a result of his team being poorer), he does come up with the assists with 9 so far in his career and do consider he is still only 22. Playing in the Ligue 1 has definitely aided his development and in terms of potential his is greater than both Van der Wiel and Debuchy.
Key Attributes:
Pace - Very quick and nimble, similar to Van der Wiel in this regard, but he is more agile and smaller. While VDW is bigger and stronger, Azpilicueta is a shorter and less physical full back but more skillful.
Marking - From what I've seen and heard, the lad can mark very well. He's never too tight nor does he stand off too much, he seems to have a natural marking and positioning ability.
Aggression - As I stated before, this kid is really fiery out there and never backs down from a challenge. He's already picked up 29 yellows in his career and two reds, but surprisingly no straight reds.
He also possesses a very good long throw, think almost Ryan Shotton and this coupled with his potential to be truly world class makes him a signing we shouldn't pass on.
He will never have any aerial ability owing to his smallish frame and physique but he represents the attacking modern full/wingback that Chelsea so crave and he should be available at a decent price so I say yes, lets go get him.
