Position: Right back
Age: 24
Nationality: Dutch
Current Team: Ajax
Appearances: 184 (12)
Estimated Price: 6 - 8 million pounds
Other Interested Teams: Real Madrid, Roma
He's been on Chelsea's radar for quite a few years now; the club has always been interested but a formal offer has never been made. It seemed as if last season, we would not get his signature as he was set on a move to Valencia. But the move never materialized and Valencia's financial woes means that they will not be buying this summer.
The Dutch international is a product of the famed Ajax youth system and plays as an attacking right back - something we could use after having seen Bosingwa's failed attempts at trying to be one.
Although this season was not his best; a groin injury laid him low for a large part of 2012, he remains a great right back now and for the future, one who would be a solid investment.
Key Attributes:
Pace - Quick up and down the flanks, Van der Wiel will add an extra dimension to the right side of Chelsea's attack with his speed.
Discipline: Very disciplined and does not give away too many fouls. He's never been shown a straight red in his career and till date has only 16 yellows in close to 200 matches.
Work Rate: He is constantly harrying defenders and his work rate is said to be of a high level.
He is also blessed with great passing and is a solid crosser as well, something that would be welcome in the right back department.
Since he has only a year to run on his curent contract he would be available on the cheap, something Chelsea must keep in mind in light of the Financial Fair Play rules coming into place.
I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Blues one bit, he'd be a great signing at a bargain price. It will all depend on his performance in the Euros and a good show would definitely spur us on.
It seems as if he's forthcoming to a move to London if Goal.com is anything to go by.
